Nicely put. You have to bear in mind who the target audience of the book is aimed at, rather than just judging it by contents alone. Yes the book is missing characters, yes lots of the stats are wrong (Stats on Transformers are a bit odd anyway, as they are fictional) and yes the quotes from the movie are a bit odd. The book isn't aimed at Transformers fans though, and it's probably not aimed at 20-30 somthings either, so we took that into account on the book).
I agree a true "guide" would be great, with concepts, information on the making of the film, facts and figures, but that was never going to be released at this point in time.

I don't see why it has to be dumbed down for the under 10s. The Ultimate Guide wasn't, and I would have picked it up on the same things when I was an 8 year old anyway. Just because the staff at DK presumably didn't learn to read and write until their thirties doesn't mean they can assume other kids are dumb like them. Kids should be challenged and inspired by what they read because let's face it they'd all rather read a Transformers book than a Dickens novel or Beatrix Potter, so it's the responsibility of publishers to at least make a modicum of effort. The text of this book was clearly thrown together in a matter of days to make a quick buck. If Simon Furman did actually contribute to it, and not just attend some kind of ideas meeting, then he could at least have made it consistent with his own prequel story.

He did write it, other than being credited for it he comments on that on his blog. It is odd that it wasn't linked to the prequals, but I guess they aren't "official" in a Transformers Movie story .. that is is the Prequal book is meant to be the official prequal.
Quiet odd.
