The Buzz Log - Search Spikes and Trends
Toon Throwdown
Thursday July 21, 2005 4:00AM PT
Transformers
Hollywood's pillaging of famed Gen X shows continues. Two films, one based on the blue-hued Smurfs (+61%) and another involving the only slightly less creepy killer robot Transformers (+126%), are officially in the works. While the inevitable sugar cereal tie-ins are still years away, both franchises are already experiencing a hyperactive boom in the Search box. True, these two Saturday morning bellwethers have little in common, but seeing as they'll both someday be after your hard-earned dollars at the Cineplex, we felt a Buzz grudge match was in order. Papa Smurf and the rest of the hippie commune vs. Optimus Prime and his maniacal crew of death machines. Grab a scorecard -- this one's gonna get ugly.
Blue vs. Bots
The Smurfs Transformers
Estimated Release Date
Smurfs 2008 / Transformers 2007
What's unusual about this version
Smurfs- Shot in 3-D -- it's like Vanity Smurf is admiring himself right beside you.
Transformers- Live action means whiny humans will likely play a bigger role.
Reason to See It
Smurfs- Smurfette was your first love.
Transformers - Giant robots fighting over control of the Earth? Hmm, could happen.
Reason to Avoid It
Smurfs - 90 minutes of that Smurf song is a bit much. Transformers - Two words: Michael Bay.
Most Annoying Character
Smurfs - Brainy Smurf
Transformers - Bumblebee
Sworn Enemy
Smurfs- Gargamel and his underfed cat, Azriel
Transformers - Those damned Decepticons (and hapless humans, of course).
Something we hope each film retains from its source material
Songs
Smurfs - The song is so simple to sing your 3 year old will never forget it...Is that a good thing?
Tranaformers - "You've Got the Touch" was made famous by Dirk Diggler, but it was originally heard in the '80s Transformers flick. Yeah!
Suggested Plotline
Smurfs - marooned on deserted island without food or water. Cannibalism ensues.
Transformers - Autobots move to Detroit. Help revitalize auto industry by offering 0% financing on all bazooka-tailpipe combos.
