I don't see why gimmicks have to be range-wide. It seems to me that they work better if the use is restricted a little.

I agree with that. Like the combining in Galaxy Force.
To be honest I think GF has got the character balance just right. Instead of everyone being good at everything. They have the warriors, scouts, intelligence operatives, mechanics.

Aaron Archer tried to explain at Botcon that gimicks had to be implimented in a whole line, rather than a few figures.
But that comment doesn't explain when you get Headmasters and Targetmasters and such cropping up mid-line.
He tried to say that small selections of characters with a similar gimick, don't appeal to the target audience.

For those of you who keep saying the bots looked crap when powerlinked.. I invite you to put Towline atop Downshift. That is the best combo of them all. Looks awesome. Worst gimmick for me is Hyper Power. Sticking a extra gun on something that just turns round and that's it.. Just isn't my kinda thing. I'm not much into guns anyway.. I think ALL TFs should have blades.  I know you're joking but surely if eveyrone had blasdes then the ones that did wouldnt be cool anymore? Just a thought since we're on the lines of not over exposing/using gimmicks. |

powerlinking was a waste to me.... individuals suffered because of the way they had to transform. A gimmick shouldnt affect the playablilty of toys....
