Hi. I've been reading with interest about the various KOs out there, and that these have started to appear in some cases because Hasbro/Takara have lost or destroyed molds for some of the figures such as the dinos, Sunstreaker, Wheeljack, etc. Has it ever been established which ones do and do not have existing molds still for possible reissue, or do we just know from the more popular figures being requested for reissue that we know *some* of them don't?
Whilst I'm not doubting this isn't true, I find it odd that Wheeljack, Sunstreaker, Grimlock, Sludge and Slag went on to be reissued as part of the "Classic Heroes" line in 1990/1, yet subsequently are no longer available / usable. They must have gone AWOL / deteriorated comparitively recently...
Just curious as to what is and isn't out there...
Cheers,
Ed.

At BotCon 06 Hasbro and Takara said that anything that hadn't been re-released in the last 10 years was definitely gone. They said that most if not all of the combiners were lost as well.
Of course back in 1999 Takara ran a poll to see what figures they should re-release in 2000, and many of the lost molds were on it. The list was molds they knew they had, so it goes against the later lists.

Interesting - the fact they've reissued Skylynx with Omega Supreme on the way would seem to contradict this as well (neither having been previously re-released AFAIK).
Cheers for the info!

Personally I think that the KO we're seing now are made from the orginal moulds. As far as I can tell there are no differences in the moulding...maybe in the quality of the plastic but not the moulds themselves. Maybe Takara/Tony don't have access to them.
If those KO's wern't easy and quick to produce I don't anyone would bother doing them at all.

It was esentially confirmed that they moulds were ones which were abandoned when the production was moved from the factories they'd used for years to the chaper ones elsewhere.
The KO's show signs of mold degredation, but not that much, and the people making them confirmed that they've had to repair some bits.

and you guys would not believe that i could make moulds at work just like the ones used for tfs.hell i made one for a lip stick holder once. solid steel too, the company didnt like the price though. hence plastic injection rather drop forging. but i am gonna make me a decepticon badge out of steel. its a must.

wouldn't making it out of Steel make it a little messy?

Getting a blender big enough would be the first big hurdle...

I was thinking woodchipper to get small enough chunks to blend

Not sure we'd be able to fit Steel's guns in a woodchipper. We'd have to use a car crusher first...
