I'm suggesting here that SWTF would have been much better if the mech modes had been TF characters, not giant versions if the pilots. I'd have much preferred that because then I could rationalise it as another alternative universe, like evolutions or even the movie.
I bought Boba Fett when they first came out, and despite my love for Slave 1, I sold it in the end as I couldn't stand the terrible robot mode.
In John Lewis today on Oxford Street, they had Jango Fett, ARC Fighter, Imperial Shuttle and Vader. I caved and bought ARC fighter because I love that design, and the shuttle as it was the only one I've seen anywhere. I haven't opened that one yet and may just sell it on.
Having opened the ARC fighter, I'm about as disappointed as I expected to be. The alt mode is all out of proportion, while the robot mode just sucks arse.
If I'd had my way, the robot modes would have been:
anakin's fighter - starscream?
obi wan's fighter - thrust
Emperor's shuttle - astrotrain
Jango/Boba Fett - Shockwave? (Maybe Soundwave for Jango's?)
Vader's TIE fighter - Megatron?
Saesee tin starfighter - Sunstorm
Republic Gunship - Jetfire
ARC fighter - hard one this, since I have the figure, I'd say it bears an odd resemblance to Jazz. or maybe silverbolt? god knows who the warpaint version would be.
luke's x-wing - bumblebee?
darth maul - starscream? (again)
millennium falcon - prime and ultra magnus?
grievous's bike -
Death Star - unicron
mace windu's fighter - skywarp
I'm interested in any other suggestions (especially where I put ? as I'm not happy with the final choice), or anyone filling in my blanks, or any ideas about how one might kitbash new heads onto these things.
If they'd done decent robot modes drawing from TF characters, I'd probably buy all of them. Of course, it's probably lucas that stops the cross branding from going down this path.
