I've questioned this before but I think only too Minion.
Basically I have always wondered if there was a mistake somewhere down the line and the Inner Robots for Bludgeon and Pincher were actually switched from what they were originally intended for.
Now I know the pretender shells for the smaller second wave pretenders are more customized for their inner-bots but I just wonder if they were changed early on in the creative process.
Two reasons for this. One the line up... Longtooth - Truck (vehicle), Doubleheader - Plane (vehicle), Stranglehold - Rhino (beast), Octopunch - Crab (beast), Then the two that don't fit Bludgeon - tank and Pincher Scorpion
Personally the shells have very little to say about what there inner bot is but they at least have a similarity in some sense like Octopunch is still a sea beasty and Doubleheader has two nose cones.
But a Samurai warrior and a Tank? Bludgeons inner robot has just never fitted in my opinion. Now if he were a scorpion... now that I could see. Pincher's robot form looks deadly and the head has horns that almost mimic Bludgeons helmet.
Pincher's shell on the other hand is fairly generic, a bit blocky and has tech things on the hips and left shoulder. Much more suiting a tank I would think. The name is the biggest link too his alt mode but that is easily changed in the latter part of the creative production.
The Autobots would be all vehicles and the Decepticons all beasts.
As I said the inner bots cant really be swapped around now... but early in creation it may have been a posobility.

very interesting, only way to find out would be t question the team that put it out.. but if the cartoons are the same maybe it was a cartoon error and the toy just followed suit?

I've no idea what I said in the past but thinking about it now it seems quite plausible. Maybe it was like the Triggerbots/Cons thing with Dogfight and Windsweeper being swapped.
I think the beast thing makes sense as it was a recurring Tf theme (headmasters etc). Bludgeon would make a cool scorpion as well, the tank did always seem ill fitting and to be honest his inner robot was always super bland. I do like IDW's re-imagining of his Cybertronian mode.
If it is a swap, maybe they thought a Scorpion and Crab were too similar to be on the same side?

I do remember you saying something about Dogfight and Windsweeper before.
It seems likely the more I think of it

Hasn't there been other figs/characters that have had faction switching, I mean I heard that Astrotrain was intially penned in as an autobot. Mind you don't know how true that is

Mind you don't know how true that is Astrotrain would be an Autobot a Space Shuttle and Train is more a good guy image anyway!! Subway and Space Rocket is more Decepticon friendly IMO

You know now I think of it Stranglehold and Longtooths shells seem a bit odd too. Longtooth is the only Autobot monster pretender and Stranglehold was the only human Decepticon one save for Starscream.

Longtooth and Stranglehold were switched. Also note that Longtooth has a big skull and crossbones on his belt. Not very Autobot.
