Pretty sure that's a KO Mirage you've got there, given the price.
In case you don't know, there's now a lot of G1 KOs out there (most unfortunately), including Metroplex and Mirage. A good rule of thumb is to be wary of anything complete in a mint box, with a cheap BIN, and which is being sold by Chinese or Hong Kong sellers.

How do I find out? Is there any info I can ask the seller to validate? Such as year of origin on box etc?
Why do you think its a KO? I didn't realise this, I just assumed he was selling it cheap.
He's a Canadian seller, if I get it and it is a KO I'll have paid through paypal and can claim I guess - he states that it is not a knock off, maybe he doesn't know?
I've messaged the seller and asked him to confirm the date on the box and the Transformer that it isn't a KO, and if it is a KO I'll go through a paypal dispute to get my money back.

I've just bought this auction, it was a BIN at 35 which seemed very reasonable considering what it was, on the auction title it just said autobot mirage etc, nothing else, then I happened to look at it (as I like mirage) and it was boxed! Also it was a starting bid at 25 with no bids on it, I assume because people saw the photo of a loose mirage and assumed it wasn't boxed? Anyway, I bid on it in the closing seconds and won it! Is this a bargain, I've seen the same item at a BIN at 54. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270236390676&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017The down side is the postage is double what I'd pay if I bought it from the UK, its from dreaded Canada lol, but then again, it still works out quite cheap I guess. The box is in nice shape though, looks very clean. I don't know much about Transformers as I'm new to this, but is this a good deal, it seems like a good deal to me. 99% sure that it's one of the recent 're-issues'. By 're-issues' I mean fairly good quality KO in box of course! Have you backed out of the sale, or is it on it's way/with you? Because if you look at his current auctions, he has an, "original G1 Transformers Mirage. 100% complete with applied stickers, weapons, instruction book, bubble insert, and box. This is NOT a low quality knock-off", up for sale again!! Notice he didn't say it wasn't a KO, just not a low quality KO. Sneaky b'stard! cgi.ebay.co.uk/g1-vintage-Mirage-transformers-autobot_W0QQitemZ270238426480QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270238426480&_trkparms=72%3A12|39%3A1|65%3A12&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14 Also if you look at his feedback, there are quite a few marked as 'private', which I would bet are all G1 Mirage or G1 Ratbat (with ears!) sales. Further back in his feedback, you find the following feedback left for him: "Fast shipping, no communication and not official nintendo game" "...excellent material for the price..." "not vintage transformer. seller may not have realised." (G1 Ravage) So, in fact, I'd say 100% sure ya got a KO. Prob good quality though, and he will look nice on display.

I've contacted the seller and said I've made a mistake, I said I had the impression it was an original trasformer, I've offered to pay for his relisting fees, but he might be really difficult about it and go through an unpaid item strike process, but I'd rather have a strike than something I don't really want - I've decided just to go for originals.
Looking at the auction again, yes it is clear he's carefully worded his description, but what threw me is why would a KO be out of the box, usually they're MISB. Also his feedback history has him selling knock offs which I didn't realise, and also I've just searched for Mirage auctions and he has another Mirage without a photo up for auction, the exact same description.
If I wasn't a newbie I'd have spotted that, I guess as you say, you live and learn ...
Thanks Oddsey for taking the time BTW in describing why this is a KO, I appreciate that.

No Problem. ;D I think I might of nearly bought a Ratbat off him quite a while ago. (I remember the seller was from Canada, and also had Ravage for sale) I think you should be OK regarding non-payment. I'm sure they don't want more neg feedback about selling KO's! what threw me is why would a KO be out of the box, usually they're MISB.I 'd say you just answered you're own question there! People are more likely to accept it as an original at that price point. If it was MISB at that price, you would be more suspicious and question it. The seller is being quite clever really, the b'stard!

If you're after some quick references on what toys there are, have a look at these. Great resource thanks, I've been looking through them both. I can't believe they made 2066 Transformers! That's just insane. Atleast I'm limiting myself to just buying the classics, rather than the later issues. Yeah Oddsey, this guy also was selling a Ratbat when I looked at his auctions, now I think about it its so obvious this is a KO lol - atleast I have the excuse I'm a newbie. I would never have done this on star wars collecting, though I have been ripped off a couple of times on ebay.

The Mirage KO'sa re pretty good quality. I have the 4 main ones.
The easiest way to tell the Mirage KO is to look at the number on his chest/front of hood. If its a sticker than it a Legit G1, the new KO's have it Tampo'ed on.

It does look nice, just wanted to get any originals first.
This is interesting, I told the seller I didn't want a KO and he's insisted its an original! He's said 'And it's original mirage with the proper 1980 1982 takara hasbro marking on his leg.' What do I do now? I assume KO's have these takara hasbro date markings?
Just emailed a guy who put up a thread end of last year wanting sell a load of boxed transformers, only thing is I don't know if anyone pm'd him and made him an offer or not, or if no one did, if he took the collection on ebay ... I'm waiting for a reply but it doesn't look good though I have to admit.
There's loads of cool transformers in his lot, but after all this time I wonder if he's still got them, the replies he got were only after a couple of the bots, and then no more replies and he didn't say he'd sold the lot.
It would be great if he's still got the Transformers so I can make an offer ... here's waiting ... ahhhhh, the nervousness!

Oddsey, I know you're trying to help, but can you try not to double-post? Use the Edit function to add details to your last post.
Thanks.

This is worrying stuff. I know there are problems like this from my star wars collecting, and its a shame to see transformers has the same type of scammers.
Being a newbie I walked right into this one, I just thought that it was an auction that was badly listed, with a high starting bid on a picture of a loose Mirage, hence why I thought people had just given it a miss, I'd always pigeon holed KO's as MISB, not loose and boxed to intentionally throw you off. How I was wrong!
Can't believe these kind of people can get away with it, it just spoils the hobby for everyone. I think I'll try and remember those screen names listed under scammers so I don't get caught again.
If there's a thread on Transformers At The Moon about scammers/fraudsters and anyone knows it then it'd be great if you could put a link up?
