I found an old red VW beetle model down a bootsale for £1 so i bought it to do this to it. Just a quick and fun little side project. I wish i could make a Leader class scale transformable BB look like this, and i do have one lined up for a future project but thats waaaaaaaaaaay in the future. I also intend on buying a real VW Bug for myself soon, and im gonna do exactly this to it. I cant wait to drive around in a G1 BB!

Very nice. I'd like a Beetle too, but they break down a lot and I am no mechanic.

Very nice. I'd like a Beetle too, but they break down a lot and I am no mechanic. They do? Ive always heard that they were very reliable. Still, their engines are so simple if anything did happen it wouldnt take much to fix it id imagine. A good old whack with a big hammer will probably fix it. lol

Unles you've got at least a two or three grand to buy a good one, I'd think twice. Also, look out for rust under the front wings, and in the front footwells under the carpet - this bit is the floorpan and is a nightmare apparently.

I had a bug well 3 in fact
spent £3000 rebuilding it from the ground up with new parts (18 yrs ago)
spent a lot more trying to keep it running (3 new engines including one 3.0 porsche lump)
they are very expensive to run petrol wise
10 yrs ago it would cost me £20 to get to lakeside and back when petrol was 30% cheaper
trip today in my new car costs me a tenner
be prepared for a lot of time spent under the hood tweaking and maintaining
and spend at least £4-5000 on one second hand and look for garage and service bills not just a record
they're great fun but not a great car if you haven't got a high paid job
I'd have mine back on the road in a flash but I cannot afford day to day running so it's garaged

I dont want it to be in great nick from the start as i want to fix it up myself and do my own paintjob to it. I know about the rust problems and all the common problems beetles have. Ive restored one in the past which was bought for around £600,it was in a bit of a state and me and my dad restored it to look like this and theres no mechanical faults at all so far:

Spending 5 grand on one will get you a very nice one thats already been restored yes, but thats defeating the purpose of me buying one to do up myself. And im curious how a 1300 or 1600 VW engine can cost as much as you say it did, or was it because of the 3.0 Porsche engine you had in which case no wonder it cost you a fortune. I intend on buying one to save on fuel bills as my 2.0 liter Sierra Sapphire is too juicy. (not to mention beetles being tax exempt )

Is Papa Sonny a mechanic or just a keen have-a-go type of fella? I wants a Karmann Ghia convertible...

He isnt a mechanic but he knows enough, and if theres something he cant figure out he always gets the job done one way or another. A karmann ghia convertible huh? We could do a custom job like that as we know how to do all that sort of extensive body work modification stuff. Wouldnt be cheap though.
