Back in the 80s when I was collecting the Gen1s the first time round, my uncle was working in wholesale importing Transformers from China.
He, along with many other dealers made these toys available to enough persons in the UK that their activities attracted the attention of the likes of Tesco's and other hight street chains that bemoaned that these toys were in fact unsuitable for sale due to the high levels of lead paint. In other words, many of the 80s toys floating around were in fact, as we refer to today, 'knock-offs'. I remember that he was able to provide me with onslaught, constructicons and the dinobots (which I bought) and others that I cannot remmeber, which all came in identical G1 packaging with the exception of the fact the the writing was in french.
I remember this all vividly as I spent all my xmas money on a few of these (I wish I could have afforded to buy the lot!)
Soooo- where does this all lead to - Well, how many80s Gen1 toys are in fact high quality (ignoring the supposedly lead) knockoff's OR were the french transformers in fact authentic? My uncle told me that they were safe, and that the high street chains were creating a smeer campaign as they were losing money.
Anyone remeber this, or seen the french variants? Remember KO Optimus prime has a french mould stamp!?
