Just had my first ever Transmetal accident.
I picked up my Transmetal Cheetor to move it to my bed (While I'm rearanging my shelves) as I moved it I saw a few purple flakes fall down.
On closer inspection I noticed that some of the "Transmetal" on his Spark Cover had fallen off.
Is this inevitable with them all, or is there a way to avoid it?

It happened to my TM Cackle, so I've since covered my transmetals with bubble wrap and stored them away.
It's not exclusive to Beastwars figures either, I noticed some small flaking on my RID Megs and I've never even transformed him fully before.
I think the only way to try and avoid it happening is to keep them MISB or MOSC but even then I'm not 100% sure if that works indefinitely..

The thing which shocked me was I had picked the figure up by the front legs, and not touched the back in any way.
Simply moving it was enough to knock off the vacumised coating.

As I understand it, vac-metal coating is held onto the plastic by, unsurprisingly, a vaccuum, rather than stickyness, with paint. As such, the larger the area coated with the stuff, the easier it becomes to chip off. Note how Hasbro and Takara have learnt their lesson, and don't vac-metal anything in such reckless amounts any more. You still get it, and it can produce great effects, but is best in small doses, where it won't rub off.
Example: Armada Terrorsaur free from vac-metal? Not quite. There are two small rings, one on each wing, giving lovely silvery highlights.

...blimey imagine all the shiny painting on OpOp. Its all over him Sarfraz...runs to check his monkey bot My Op Op seems to be ok. I got it for £1 at a carboot sale, was really dirty, so I washed it with Flash cleaner and a brush and all the paint stayed on I suppose time will tell.......
