*kicks sonny* so were meant to be proud of defeatist attitude now? no wonder the world went rogue Whats defeatist? Theres a serious issue going on, and the public, literally powerless people want to do something about it and this is the only way they can. The people matter, and i applaud them for stopping the relay in france. Every other country should do the same, it'll give China bad publicity, maybe even cancel the Olympics and then thats a huge victory because something is on the road to change. The world is acknowledging the fact theres a problem, and the people are the ones who brought it to life and made the people who possess the power do something about it. Thats not defeatist, its progress and a nice example of your fellow man giving a crap about his neighbor for once. Your attitude is the only thing ive found defeatist through out this debate. "China are scumbags, they are killing innocent people! Its so horrible! But i cant do jack about it so anyone else who tries is just an idiot to me" Thats the jist anyway.

You know while I find it really amusing that the person who is shouting loudest about human rights in other countries is also the person who felt that actually having to participate in the systems that ensure human rights in this country was beneath him...
I do feel somewhat compelled to remind everyone to keep it civil or the thread will be locked.

I do feel somewhat compelled to remind everyone to keep it civil or the thread will be locked. Totally different conversation and circumstances. The main difference being nobody is forcing anyone against their will to care about a much bigger problem, and praise those who had the balls and ability to do something about it.

Human rights are human rights. The right to trial by Jury is one of the bases of civil rights in the western political/judicial systems. Which in turn support what we deem to be basic human rights.
I don't personally see how you can argue about human rights in another country, and expect to be taken seriously, when you have stated that you don't see the need to, nor do you wish to participate, in the systems that support them in your own.
Which is what amuses me specifically: You care for the faceless masses on the other side of the planet yet don't feel you can spend a few days caring about those same faceless masses in your own country.
Thats not to say that China's occupation and use of military force to put down demonstrators and native populations is right. Those protesting are to be admired for standing for their convictions. Those who put their lives on the line doing so even more!
But lets face it they are protesting the largest nation on the face of the planet which until recently was a totalitarian state (and in many ways * still is) which is still in a state of political flux as it moves towards what we in the western world see as "freedom".
*- OK, Most ways in fact

Lee, you said keep it nice, so try and do the same and not provoke a fiery response. You and Sonny are both entitled to your opinions, regardless of whether anyone else agrees to them or not. Same goes for you Sonny-jim.
At the end of the day, this is a serious debate that is justified in being had, let's just not let it become a flame-war please.
As for locking, I started this thread, so I've got it covered on the locking front ta.
DS has spoken.

So what are the American protesters on the Golden Gate bridge fighting for then? San Fransisco by no means of the imagination should be correlated to Americans..San Fransisco is the most liberal place in the world next to France...I'm thinking of re-naming it San't France-sisco No one really cares about the Olympics in the US we're too busy following Britney Spears and Bradd Pitt to care..plus we have Baseball, basketball and Football to keep us occupied.

By football you mean "Rugby for wimps in padding"
And lets not start on baseball "Rounders for men who don't want to be known for playing a girls game."
