Did anyone see all the protests and fights surroiunding this today? Was all over the news.
I find it all quite pathetic - whilst I understand people have some serious animosity towards the Chinese administration over human rights issues, I don't see how trying to put out the olympic torch (in itself a pretty pointless symbol) is gonna help...
Rating: 2/10 for entertainment value, must try harder.

Its not pathetic, its the whole principal of the matter and how our government doesn't seem to care about how china is treating the Tibetans. It should have been boycotted and i think the protests are totally justified especially since Gordon Brown said he was going to attend the Olympics. What are these morons thinking?! Why isnt anything being done? Too scared they wont hold the Olympics in London in 2012 more than likely, and since theres no oil to be gained from helping the people then nobody gives a shite.
You ought to take stuff like that into consideration next time. i dont think you quite understand how bad the situation in China is.

Unfortunately, it would seem that protesting in China could potentially get you shot.
See the Free Tibet campaign website for enless pictures of dead monks full of bullet holes from teh recent unrest. Nice stuff.
I have to say, I take no stance on any of this though as I don't know enough about the country or its history, all I was saying was that protesting here against some poor buggers running in the streets is going to achieve exactly nothing.

Doing anything like that in China will get you killed or locked up, thats the whole damn problem! Other countries with large Chinese populations, and any country with a basic sense of respect for human rights for that matter should be doing something. Instead everythings over in Iraq for no reason.

Some people on this discussion dont see the point of the protests or how it can make a change. These protests have achieved exactly what they set out to do, which was to highlight the plight of the Tibetans people, just look at every newspaper front page tomorrow for the proof and the media coverage in general. Some heads up information here, the Chinese invaded in the 1950's and massacred 1 in 6 of the indignous population of Tibet. That is one million people, from a population of 6 million. Furthermore, the evil is not just incumbant to Tibet - To see just nasty the chinese administation really is, as an example, search youtube for 'bbc china organ trade'. Yes, its actually as bad as it perhaps infers, they are taking people for minor misdemanors, stick them through their kangaroo court system, then upon giving them a clean bill of health, excute them by firing squad in the face. If your need of a kidney, heart or liver, and have £50,000+ to hand, you know where to go. There is an arguement that the olympics should be seperate from the evils of the world, I think this is a romatic notion that is morally bankrupt to abhorrent to ostrisize [sic] oneself from. Remember Berlin 1936? I only hope that we might have a Jesse Owens of our time who has the balls to make a statement, ok heis presence as a black competitor riled Adolf Hitler no end, but let see someone upon receiving their medal show a free tibet symbol.

Dude, my point was that, in my opinion, highlighting it yet again isn't going to change anything. All these things are common knowledge and have been for years and years and no-one has ever done anything about it.
No other country has the strength to do anything militarily against the Chinese administration except maybe the US, but this wouldn't help anyway as the people would suffer too.
When you consider that China is the world's workshop, no-one really wants to rock the boat as THEY would bear the brunt. Hence why every country says "we don't condone that", but they will not put in place any economic sanctions...
I think the current thinking is to play ball with the Chinese administration, continue to talk, make deals, make nice and hopefully they will slowly come round to the idea that some of this stuff isn't such a good idea...
This is just my take on it all mind.
Good idea though - I totally hope a major athlete (or athletes) does that with the symbol during a medal ceremony. They will NOT get locked up, after all, how could China possibly get away with that?
That's the way forward, good thinking that man!
I'm kinda glad I didn't get that job in Beijing now with all the trouble!

No other country has the strength to do anything militarily against the Chinese administration except maybe the US, We are currently spread a little thin to get involved, that and the fact that China owns more of the United States then we do.. Everything out here is made in China and China puts a limit on what they can import from us.. Ohh yeah China's military out numbers the US 2 to 1.

The sponsors of the olympics who obviously invest enormous sums of money will be reeling from these events in the log term if public sentiment can be turned.
Devil Soundwave, I agree with much of your last post, it does seem the impossible to bring about a change in China. But I think at best we can make it clear how we differ with them, and the events unfolding just now are possibily the only platform where such an impact might be felt 0 hitting them in the pocket, remember the sponsors will not want to be associated with such bad publicitiy, mind you its probably all a bit late for any withdrawal now?
To top it all off, am I a hypocrite if I continue to buy transformers from China? Sadly yes!
